Intro to the periodic table Flashcards
What are the periods?
Horizontal rows are called periods, all elements in a period have the same number of shells. The period # is the number of shells
What are the groups?
The vertical comluns are called groups, all elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their valence shells. Elements in the same group are similar to eachother
Which ones are metals
The ones on the left
Which are non metals
The ones on the right (hyrogen is a non metal but is often put in the middle)
What is a metal
A metal is defines as an element that has 1 2 or 3 valence elctrons
How many valence electrons does a non metal have
4 or more electrons
Which ones are the main groups
The ones from 1 to 7 going from left to right and the last group on the right is group 0 which are the noble gases with completely filled valence shells
there are only 2 elements in period 1
Hydrogen and helium
