Definitions Flashcards
What is a ph of a substance
A value that indicates the level of acidity/alkalinity in the substance
Describe a Ph scale
a numeric scale with a range of 0-14 with 0-6 being acidic, 7 being neutral and 8-14 being alkaline
What is an indicator
A chemical that produces a colour change depending on the Ph of a substance it exists in an acidic medium or an alkaline medium, the colour of the two forms are different
list two forms indicators are available in
paper, soultion
Blue litmus paper in an acidic solution
red
red litmus paper in a basic solution
blue
Universal pH paper in basic solution
changes colour of ph paper depending on its pH
methyl orange indicator
acid- red alkali- yellow
phenolphthalein
acid- colourles alkali- pink
Universal indicator
available in paper/solution. A mixture of indicators and is able to produce colour change at each pH level
Ph meter
comtains a combination of electrode that is sensitive to H+ concentration, it is inserted and will give you a Ph value to 2 decimal places
