A game played as part of a season-long competition. Teams earn points, and the team with the most points at the end of the season wins the league.
A league match
A game played in a competition that involves elimination from the competition.
A cup match
A match where the losing team is eliminated from the tournament.
A knockout match
A match used to decide something important, such as promotion, relegation, or qualification.
A play-off
A match between two local rival teams.
A derby
The round with four teams left. The winners move to the final.
A Semi-Final
The round with eight teams left in a cup tournament.
A Quarter-Final
A match played between the winners of two different competitions, often the league champion and cup winner.
A Super Cup
The last match of the tournament, which decides the winner.
The Final
The first phase of a tournament where teams are divided into groups. Teams play several matches, and the top teams move to the knockout stage.
A Group-Stage Match
A non-competitive match played for practice, training, or charity
A Friendly
A match played to secure a place in a major tournament, like the World Cup or the Champions League.
A Qualification Match
A match-up in a cup competition played over two games (home and away). The team with the better aggregate score over both legs advances.
A Tie
The first match of a two-part series in a tournament. One team plays at home.

The second match of a two-part series, played at the other team’s home stadium.
