A blocker
A player who positions themselves to impede or slow down attacking players making runs into dangerous areas.
A corner taker
The player responsible for delivering the ball during a corner kick.
A short corner
A corner kick that is played with a short pass to a nearby teammate instead of crossing the ball directly into the box.
Attack the ball
To aggressively move toward the ball to win a header or make a decisive play.
A dummy kick
When a player runs up as if they are going to strike the ball but intentionally does not, often to deceive the opposition.
A counter-movement
When a player moves in one direction before quickly changing direction to lose their marker and create space.
A kick taker
The player responsible for delivering the ball during a set-piece, such as a free kick, corner kick, or penalty.
Man-Marking
A defensive tactic where each player is assigned to closely guard a specific opponent, particularly during set-pieces like corners or free kicks.
Mixed defending
A defensive strategy used during set-pieces where a team combines both zonal marking and man-marking.
A receiver
The player who is positioned to receive the ball from the kick taker, either by heading, volleying, or controlling it.
Screens
Players who position themselves to block or shield the movement of defenders, typically to create space for a teammate.
The wall
A group of players positioned by the defending team to block a free kick taken from a distance, typically near the penalty area.
A thrower
The player responsible for taking a throw-in.
Zonal Marking
A defensive strategy during set-pieces where players are assigned to defend specific areas of the pitch, rather than marking individual opponents.
