types of experiments Flashcards
what is a laboratory experiment
experiment conducted in special environment where variables are controlled
what are the strengths of a lab experiment
high control over extraneous variables so have higher internal validity
replication possible due to high levels of control
limitations of lab experiment
lack generalisability (not like everyday life)
pls may be aware of being studied bringing in demand characteristics
what is a field experiment
experiment conducted in more natural environment where IV is deliberately manipulated
strengths of field experiment
higher mundane realism as environment is more natural
pls usually unaware of being studied so reduces demand characteristics
limitations of field experiment
less control of extraneous variables results more likely to be confounding
ethical issues pps don’t know they are being studied
what is a natural experiment
conducted when it is not possible ethically or practically to manipulate the IV as it occurs naturally
strengths of natural experiment
high ecological validity
pps unaware they are taking part reducing demand characteristics
limitations of natural experiment
little or no control over variables as IV, extraneous and confounding variables all occur naturally
cannot conclude the IV caused a change in the DV
what is a quasi experiment
IV occurs naturally it is a condition of the person e.g gender or age
strengths of quasi experiment
carried out in controlled enviroment
allows comparisons between types of people to be made
limitations of quasi experiment
can only be used where conditions occur naturally
cannot randomly allocate pps so may be confounding variables
