types of data Flashcards
research methods
How many types of data are there?
two
What are the types of data?
Quantitative and qualitative
What is quantitative data?
Data that is represented in numerical form
How is quantitative data collected?
Using experiments, correlations, structured observations, questionnaires and interviews when closed questions are used
What are the advantages of quantitative data?
- most scientific as it’s more objective
- easier to analyse/summarise and can be easily represented visually in graphs
- less open to interpretation so more reliable
What are the disadvantages of quantitative data?
- does not offer an in depth view so is low in validity
- limited in scope only tells us how often not why
What is qualitative data?
Data that is non-numerical
How is qualitative data collected?
Using unstructured observations, unstructured interviews, questionnaires and interviews when open questions are used
What are the advantages of qualitative data?
- offers researchers an in depth picture so is high in validity
- tells us why behaviours occur
What are the disadvantages of qualitative data?
- less scientific as it is subjective
- harder to analyse as it cant be represented visually
- can be interpreted differently by different researchers so is low in reliability
