What do statistical tests tell us?
Whether there is a significant difference, relationship or association between variables. If results come are significant it means that we accept our hypothesis.
What are the tests for nominal data?
Independent groups- Chi Squared
Repeated measures/ matched pairs- Sign test
Test of association or correlation- Chi Squared
What are the tests for ordinal data?
Independent groups- Man Whitney
Repeated measures/ matched pairs- Wilcoxon
Test of association or correlation- Spearman’s rho
What are the tests for interval data?
Independent groups- Unrelated t test
Repeated measures/ matched pairs- Related t test
Test of association or correlation- Pearson’s r
What is the calculated value for a correlation?
The correlation coefficient
When is a test significant?
When the experimental/alternative hypothesis can be supported and the null hypothesis rejected (insignificant is opposite)
In some tests the calculated value must be higher than the critical value to be significant, others it must be lower
