The Endocrine System Flashcards
What’s the endocrine system?
Made up of glands which produce hormones
Works alongside the nervous system
Controls important bodily functions
Hormones travel through the bloodstream and affect cells with the receptor site for that particular hormone
What are the 7 glands?
Pituitary gland
Hypothalamus
Pineal gland
Thyroid gland
The pancreas
Adrenal gland
Ovaries/ testes
What’s the Pituitary gland?
A gland in the brain which is known as the ‘master gland’
It monitors all other hormones and produces its own which cause other glands to release hormones when necessary
What’s the Hypothalamus?
Located in the brain
Controls the pituitary gland
The link to the CNS
What’s the Pineal gland?
A gland in the brain which
Converts serotonin to melatonin (in response to low light levels)
Regulates our sleep/wake cycle
What are the Thyroid glands?
Glands located in the throat
Produces the hormone thyroxin
Plays vital roles in metabolism, heart and muscle function, brain development, and maintenance of bones.
What’s the pancreas?
A gland in the torso area
Regulates insulin levels
Aids digestion by producing digestive enzymes
What are the Adrenal glands?
A gland in the torso area
Releases adrenaline and noradrenaline
Triggers certain biological processes that deal with stress during ‘fight or flight’ mode
What are the Ovaries/Testes?
Produces oestrogen/progesterone (ovaries)
Produces testosterone (testes)
Regulates reproduction
Causes sex differences
