What is OCD? And what are 3 compulsions
A condition characterised by obsessions and compulsive behaviours. The diagnostic statistical manual (DSM-5) is used by psychiatrists to help classify and diagnose mental health issues such as OCD. This manual outlines OCD characteristics and associated disorders
-trichotillmania- pulling your hair compulsively
-hoarding disorder- collecting belongings compulsively and being unable to part with them
-excoriation disorder- picking your skin compulsively
What are the cognitive characteristics of OCD?
Obsessions- intrusive,unwanted and unpleasant thoughts
They’re often aware that these are irrational yet cannot help but feel the anxiety
What are the behavioural characteristics of OCD?
Compulsions- repetitive behaviours done to reduce the feelings of anxiety because of the obsessions
Avoidance- avoid situations where they may be faced with their obsessions, the avoidance will reduce the feelings of anxiety
What are the emotional characteristics of OCD?
Extreme anxiety
Depression-they can’t enjoy situations because of avoidance
Guilt- if the compulsions haven’t been complete
