Types of Anatomical Movement on a Joint Flashcards
aBduction
movement away from a midline
aDdiction
movement towards a midline
flexion
decreasing the angle of a joint
extension
increasing the angle of a joint
cicumduction
circular movement of a limb; is flexion+extension+aBduction+aDduction
external rotation
rotation away from a midline, aka lateral rotation
internal rotation
rotation towards a midline, aka medial rotation
pronation
turning the palm downward, crossing the radius and ulna (think of pouring a liquid out of your palm)
supination
turning the palm upward, uncrossing the radius and ulna (think of the hand as a bowl for soup, must be facing towards the sky)
eversion
turning the sole of the foot outward
inversion
turning the sole of the foot inward
dorsiflexion
bringing the top of the foot towards the anterior tibia; bringing the top of
the hand towards the posterior forearm (when in anatomical position)
plantar/palmar flexion
pointing your toes at the floor (think wearing high heels); bringing the palm towards the anterior forearm (when in anatomical position)
opposition
diagonal movement of the thumb across the palm in order to make contact with other fingers (phalanges 2-5)
