Twin studies Flashcards
What are Monozygotic twins?
Genetically identical twins
What are Dizygotic Twins?
Non-identical twins (Just as related as ordinary siblings)
What is twin studies aim?
To compare behavioral similarity and differences between the 2 types of twins
What does the biological approach suggest about twin studies?
That both types of twins would share same family , same upbringing ,environments and would be born at the same time so any differences would have to be as a result of differences in our genetic makeup.
-So if behavior of identical twins is more similar that Non-identical twins behaviour is down to nature and not nurture
1 Example of twin studies used in real life?
In Schizophrenia studies finding that MZ twins have a higher consistency of schizophrenia than DZ twins showing it must have a genetic element.
What can happen if MZ twins are separated at birth?
They can be traced and tested for similarities in behavior which could then be due to nature because they have been brought up in completely different environments.
-However these cases are quite rare
