Animals in Lab experiments Flashcards
When are animals chosen to be used in experiments?
When it would be unethical to do on humans
1 example of an unethical experiment that would need to be done on animals?
administering a drug to see the effect on behaviour with maximum control over all the variables as animals can have their lives completely controlled
-also you can breed genetically similar animals to remove the chances of individual differences effecting the results
What happened in Pfeiffer?
- implanted gonads into newborn rats
- Male gonads into female rats caused release of male sex hormones showing reversed sexual behaviour
What did Pfeiffer conclude?
That hormones effect brain structure which consequently effects behaviour
where was the study of Castner carried out?
Yale uni
what happened in Castner?
- Monkeys developed schizophrenia like symptoms due to selective brain damage caused by x-rays done during early weeks of foetel development
- Monkeys were tested fine while growing up but developed these symptoms in puberty
