Q

what is Androgen Insensitivity syndrome?

A
  • where a person who is genetically male is resistant to male hormones (androgens) whilst developing in the womb and so develops female genitalia.
  • However not all have CAIS and so have undeveloped parts of both genitalia

Q

What usually happens with those with PAIS?

Q

what did Pfeiffer find?

A

he found it was possible to successfully carry out a procedure to change male and famle sex behaviours in rats at an early age so the rat adapts to the new hormones.

Q

What does Pfeiffer’s research support?

A

he would support the early interventions on children to gender assign because he would say it was then easier for them to adapt to their new gender and the new hormones.

Q

Why would people disagree with Pfeiffer on the asumptions he makes?

A

they would say that the gender role development in humans is much more complex than in rats so we should be cautious about how successful early biological interventions might be in children.

Q

The David Reimer case challanges the ethics of trangender operations , why?

A

he was castrated and raised as a girl , it did not work and he later got chnaged back into a male , this therefore agrees with the side that says transgender operations should be postponed until the child is old enough to make their own decisions.
