MRI scanning Flashcards

1
Q

Why are Scanning techniques useful to researchers?

A

It allows them to research the brains of living people without having to cut into the head of a patient and therefore draw conclusions on the brain structure and behavior.

Q

what is the procedure?

A
  • P are placed in very large scanner that send a very srong magnetic field through their head
  • this magnetic field causes the nuclei in hydrogen molecules in the brain to spin around which is picked up by the scanner
  • because hydrogen concentrations vary in areas of the brain the scanner can produce a detailed picture of the brain based on how many hydrogen molecules it picks up in each area
