MRI scanning Flashcards
1
Q
Why are Scanning techniques useful to researchers?
A
It allows them to research the brains of living people without having to cut into the head of a patient and therefore draw conclusions on the brain structure and behavior.
2
Q
What type of scan is this (s/f)?
A
Structural
3
Q
What does a structural scan mean?
A
shows a picture of the brain inside the skill so specialists can identify areas of damage or tumors.
4
Q
what is the procedure?
A
- P are placed in very large scanner that send a very srong magnetic field through their head
- this magnetic field causes the nuclei in hydrogen molecules in the brain to spin around which is picked up by the scanner
- because hydrogen concentrations vary in areas of the brain the scanner can produce a detailed picture of the brain based on how many hydrogen molecules it picks up in each area
