Evaluation of animal experiments Flashcards
1 strength in regard to experimental validity
Animals show no demand characteristics as they have no desire to please etc
1 strength in regards to animal aging
Animals age much quicker so changes in the drug on maturity can be observed over a short period of time
1 strength in terms of reliability
We can have good control over animals which makes it easier to draw cause and effect conclusions as we control all aspects of their life and do things to them that would be unethical to humans.
1 example of something we can do to animals that would be unethical to humans?
deliberateley damage part of their brains
1 Weakness to do with genralisability and credibility?
Hard to generalise finding to humans as we are very different from other species such as rats therefore credibility is often questioned
1 example of how we are very different from other species?
we have a complex language unlike any other species
1 weakness regarding to interpretation?
Animals cannot tell us how they feel or what is motivating them to bahvave in a certain way so this is all subject to interpretation which could be taken very differentely by different scientists
1 Weakness regarding difficulty and cost?
very diffcult and costly as they have to comply with ethical guidelines making sure the animals have special housing and proper monerting of welfare
