Challenges as the black women are not represented as exotic other. The women are instead constructed as powerful as politicians are seen as inspirational. Conforms to hooks ideas that feminism is a political commitment. The ideas that race and gender determine the extent in which people are discriminated against is subverted as Janelle is an influential black celebrity using her power to inspire change.
Apply halls representation theory to turntables
Stereotyping is often used to present black Americans as other and leaves audiences with a more negative racial stereotype. This is subverted and instead portrays an affluent, smart and happy family. This supports the positive message of the song and helps establish change in many ways.
Apply gilroy to turntables
The narrative embeds a positive message, constructing positive representations. They are set to challenge the under representation and misrepresentation of particular ethnic groups that may stem from colonial attitudes surrounding race.
Monae attempts to reinforce similarities rather than cultural differences - they avoid representing minorities as victims and the notion of otherness is avoided and replaced by positive representations of power through protest.
Apply Alvarado to turntables
Turntables challenges Alvarado’s ideas about black people often being stereotyped to either pitied dangerous exotic or humorous. This is clearly seen as Janelle Monáe and other people within the music video are represented as powerful such as Stacey Abrams who is constructed as an influential politician construct a more realistic and positive representation.
