Daniel Blake tells his friend who results to eating uncooked beans in a food bank. ‘It’s not your fault you’ve done amazing’. The inference here is that is the government fault that these people, in desperate poverty. They have avoided following the conventions of formatting as the film is a political message and was constructed to spread awareness of the issues displayed in the narrative and to instigate social change rather than to make huge profit.
Why doesn’t I Daniel Blake convey the genre component of formatting - hesmondhalgh
The social realism genre isn’t popular with audiences or filmmakers. The films content is inherently political and openly critical of austerity policies introduced by the conservative party.
Typically mainstream films avoid criticising particular politicians or parties as it will inevitably alienate potential viewers and risk the possibility of backlash.
Why doesn’t I Daniel Blake convey the star power component of forematting - hesmondhalgh
The use of an unknown cast is conventional of the social realism genre that goes against conventions of formatting as audiences have no prior awareness of the actors and so no star power can be used in the marketing campaign to booth sales however some may argue Ken loaches name is all over the marketing material as he is a known producer and therefore has presold fans.

BBC is a not for profit organisation and is unlikely to make profit from social realist film but they may be trying to increase their power by broadening their audience. It rejects the idea that BBC limits creativity because it is quite a niche film however they would still have to confirm to BBC values to inform, educate and entertain. Some may argue it would be easy to fit to these categories so it wouldn’t prevent creativity at all. By being funded by the BBC allows Ken Loach to produce films that mainstream organisations such as Disney wouldn’t want to fund as it would not engage enough of an audience and produce, high amounts of profits.
Apply livingstone and Lunt to I Daniel Blake
Hi Daniel, Blake was rated 15 in the UK by the BBfC. It was rated 15 primarily due to its use of stron language. In England certain words are considered particularly offensive the use of the sea word in particular may be considered to cause harm or offence.
This is indirect opposition to the producer who intended for the film to be a 12 A in order to be seen by as many audiences as possible and therefore to share the message of the film. this is an excellent example of the conflict between the producers ideology and the strictness of the UK regulation.
Living and argue that regulations are ineffective due to digitally convergent technologies and digital methods of distribution. Despite Daniel Blakes highly political mode of address the film is distributed on Disney+ in the UK which not only allows the producers to target a wider audience. It also allows younger audiences to Circumvent regulation by simply watching the film online. Therefore despite its adult content I Daniel Blake can be viewed by children.
It can be argued Daniel Blake did not deserve a rating as the political themes of the film are too important to be regulated. However, the blunt regulation of the films in the UK stopped the film from being feuded purely due to its strong language.
