Tropical rainforest Flashcards
Soil
Is not very fertile as heavy rains washes nutrients away. There are nutrients at the surface due to decayed laves.
Plants
Most trees are evergreen to take advantage of continual growing season. Many trees are tall and the vegetation cover is dense.
Animals
Contain more animal species than any other ecosystem. There are lots of insect and birds.
People
Home for many people, who have adapted to life there over many generations. They live from hunting, fishing, gathering nuts or berries and growing plants.
Climate
Same all year round-there are no definite seasons. It is hot and rainfall is very high.
Selective logging
Only some trees(old) are cut down, most trees stay standing. If only few trees are cut down, the overall structure if the forest is kept.
Replanting
When new trees are planted to replace the ones that are cut down. This means there will be trees for people to use in future.
Ecotourism
Provides an income for local people, who educate tourists about how important rainforests are, guide them around the rainforests, provide accommodation and transport.
Sustainable management
International hradwood agreements
Education
Conservation
Reducing debt of the country
Threats to rainforests
- logging
- road building
- energy development
- mineral extraction
- population size
Large biodiversity. Rainforests contain…
Half of all plant and animals in the world.
Medicine
25% of all medicine come from rainforest plants
Water
20% of world’s water is cleaned in rainforests
Oxygen
28% of world’s oxygen comes form rainforests
Leaching
Heavy rainfall can quickly dissolve and carry away nutrients
