Tectonic plates Flashcards
The earth’s surface
is separated into tectonic plates.
The core
Ball of solid(inner), because of a high pressure and liquid(outer) iron and nickel.
Mantle
Around the core. It is semi-molten rock which moves very slowly.
Crust
The outer layer of the Earth. Solid.
Oceanic tectonic plate
Is thinner(5-10 km) and more dense.
Continental tectonic plate
Is thicker(30-50 km) and less dense.
Why are tectonic plates moving?
Because of convection currents in the outer mantle under the crust.
Plate margins/boundaries
Where tectonic plates meet.
Destructive margin
Two plates are moving towards each other. When plates collide, the ground is folded and forced upwards to create mountains. When oceanic and continental, volcanoes are formed.
Constructive margin
When two plates are moving away from each other. Magma rises and fill the gap and cools, create a new crust.
Conservative margin
Two plates are moving sideways or moving in the same direction but different speed. Crust isn’t created or destroyed.
