River landforms Flashcards
Meanders and formation of slip-off slopes
Formed by erosion and deposition. The current is faster on the outside of the bend, because the river is deeper(less friction), so more erosion takes place forming river cliffs. The current is slower on the inside of the bend because the river channel is shallower. So eroded material is deposited on the inside of the bend, forming slip-off slopes.
Ox-bow lakes
1, erosion causes the outside bends to get closer
2,eventually river breaks trough neck
3,river flows along the shortest course
4, deposition cuts-off the meander, forming an ox-bow lake
Flood plains
Is the wide valley floor on both sides of river, which occasionally gets flooded. When the river floods onto the flood plain, the water slows down and deposits material. This builds up the flood plain. Also the flood plain is build by the formation of the slip-off slopes in meanders.
Levees
Natural raised bits along the edges of a river channel. During the flood, the heaviest material is deposited closest to the river channel. Over time, the deposited material builds up, creating levees along the edges of the channel.
Estuaries
Tidal areas where the river meets the sea. The water here is tidal-rises and falls every day. The water floods over the banks, carrying material which is deposited. Over time it creates areas of mudflats. At low tide they ate exposed.
