Ecosystems Flashcards
An ecosystem
Is a unit that includes all the biotic parts and the abiotic parts in an area.
Nutrient cycle
Dead material is decomposed, nutrients are released into the soil. The nutrients are then taken up by plants, which are eaten by consumers. When the plants or consumers die, the nutrients are returned to the soil.
Hot desert
Found between 15 and 35 north and south of the equator, where there is a little rainfall. Very hot during a day and very cold in the night. Shrubs or cacti are sparsely distributed in sandy soil.
Rainforest
Found around the equator, where is hot and wet all year round. An area of lash forest with dense canopies of vegetation forming distinct layers.
Tundra
Found at high latitudes. Winters are very cold and summers brief with little rainfall. The growing season is very short. Vegetation is made of mosses, grasses and low shrubs.
Grasslands
Savannah are found between the tropics. There are dry and wet seasons, but rainfall is still low. Vegetation is grasses with isolated trees.
Deciduous forest
Found in mid latitudes where are four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and winters cold. There is rainfall all year around. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the winter.
