Psychotherapy
an emotionally charged, confiding interaction between a trained therapist and someone who is dealing with psychological problems
Psychiatrists
medical doctors who have completed specific training in a psychological specialty
• they can prescribe medicine
Psychoanalysis
a method developed by Sigmund Freud who believe that psychological problems were the result of unresolved conflicts with the unconscious
Free Association
the patient talks freely + openly, discussing whatever comes to their mind
Freudian Slips
when the patient slips and makes a statement that represents a thought from the unconscious that they did not consciously intend to say
Resistance
occurs when the patient unconsciously blocks or refuses to discuss material or sensitive topics
Transference
when the patient transfers emotions to the analyst or therapist that was meant to be directed towards another person
Psychoanalysis
focuses on childhood memories and conflicts
Psychodynamic Therapy
focuses on current issues and problems that requires fewer therapy sessions
Humanistic Therapy
aims to promote self-fulfillment (satisfaction in life) by increasing self-acceptance (accepting who they are) and self-awareness through the development of free will, which emphasizes the client making their own decisions and finding solutions for their problems
Humanistic Therapists
believed that psychological problems are the result of inconsistencies, or incongruence between a person’s self-concept (thoughts of who they are), and how they may actually behave
Client-Centered Therapy/ (Person Centered Therapy)
created by Carl Rogers, encouraged the therapist to use active listening, which was characterized by the therapist being genuine, showing acceptance, and empathy with the hope that the client will develop for themselves answers to their own problems
Unconditional Positive Regard
the therapists acceptance and treating of the client as a valued person - no matter what the client states
Gestalt Therapy
believed that a patient experienced psychological problems because their perception/version of reality was not consistent with what was actually occurring
Behavior Therapy
a type of therapy that uses classical conditioning techniques to treat psychological problems - especially phobias
Mary Cover Jones
one of the first behavioral therapists to use counter conditioning, a technique that involves modifying behavior through establishing a new and better conditioned response to a stimulus
Systemic Desensitization
developed by Joe Wolpe, was a treatment used for anxiety-related problems
Exposure Techniques
techniques in which the client stays in contact or is exposed to anxiety-evoking stimuli long enough for their own anxiety to disappear - this is referred to flooding
Aversive Conditioning
types of conditioning that associates an unpleasant state with an unwanted behavior
Behavior Modification
type of behavioral treatment that uses operant conditioning techniques to treat psychological problems
Token Economy
based on positive reinforcement, modifies behavior through giving rewards following desired behavior
Extinction
used to eliminate a negative behavior through the gradual disappearance of a conditioned response through non reinforcement
Modeling
demonstrating positive behavior for those who need more positive role modelz
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
based on learning techniques and help clients to change the way they not only think, but also the way they act
Rational Emotive Therapy
ABC model written by Albert Ellis, developed a theory that correlated and improved a persons beliefs that surrounded an activating event
