Social Psychology
scientifically studies how we think about, influence, and relate to one another
Attribution Theory
we have a tendency to give casual explanations for someone’s behavior, often by crediting either the situation or the persons disposition (general mood)
Fundamental Attribution Error
the tendency to overestimate the impact of personal disposition and underestimate the impact of the situations in analyzing the behaviors of others
Mere Exposure Effect
things that become more familiar to you can develop into a like or dislike for it
Central vs Peripheral Route of Persuasion
• Central: uses facts + info
• Peripheral: uses positive association (ex: beauty, fame, a gorgeous mountain range)
Cognitive Dissonance
when our attitudes and actions are opposed, we experience tension
ex: you want to quit smoking and drinking because you know it’s harmful, but you do it anyway
Conformity
adjusting one’s behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standard
Social Facilitation
refers to improved performance on tasks in the presence of others
Social Loafing
the tendency of an individual in a group to exert less effort toward stating a common goal than when tested individually
Deindividualization
self explanatory
Group Polarization
enhances groups prevailing attitudes through a discussion
Group Think
a mode of thinking that occurs when the desire for harmony in a decision-making group overrides the realistic appraisal or alternatives => tend to go along with the group to keep peace
