what is electroconvulsive therapy used to treat.
Treatment-resistant depression and schizophrenia
What is a pro and a con with ECT
It helps with depressive symptoms in 50-70% cases but the relapse rate is very high
What is transcranial magnetic stimulation
A procedure that uses ECT currents to produce small magnetic pulses in the head - The pulses go an inch into the brain
What is repetitive TMS
When pusses in transcranial magnetic stimulation are delivered in quick succession, this produces longer lasting changes
What are common side effects of TMS
Mild headaches, fainting, scalp pain, and rare instances of seizure activity
What is prefrontal lobotomy
A psychosurgical procedure where the prefrontal lobe and the rest of the brain are separated
What is deep brain stimulation (dbs)
A modern form of psychosurgery that involves implanting electrodes into the brain to stimulate certain areas
What are the 4 major movements of psychotherapy
Insight therapy, behavior therapy, humanistic therapy, and cognitive therapy
Who is considered to be the father of modern psychology
Sigmund Freud
What is insight therapy?
Helps people gain more awareness of their unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
What is psycho analysis
A form of psychotherapy that involves multiple sessions each week for many months and years
What is “free association”
a patient is encouraged to engage in free association, which is saying every thing that comes to mind without censoring themselves.
A freudan slip is an error in speech (lm mad to see you example)
What is dream analysis
The exploration of manifest content (what the dreamer remembers) and latent content (what they don’t)
What is the difference between “resistance” and “transference”
Resistance is when a patient stops cooperating (missing appointments, thinking they don’t want therapy anymore, forgetting dreams). And transference is redirecting feelings (like love or anger) for another person onto the therapist
What is behavior therapy focused on?
Behavior therapy focuses on behavior modification, which is the process of changing problematic behaviours
