a diagnosis that can be made based on several different symptoms (like schizophrenia)
What is Bipolar Disorder
feeling two opposite extremes (like hot and cold) and the feeling of a manic episode or depressive episode
What is Hypomania
a less intense experience of mania that has the same increased energy but without the impairment in functioning
What is Bipolar ll disorder
less serious than bipolar disorder but still a sibilating condition (effects a persons ability to carry on with regular activities

why are woman 2-3 x more likely to have major depression

fear is the response to current threats (immediate danger) and anxiety is the worry about future threats
What are symptoms of Fear and symptoms of Anxiety
Fear = increased heart rate, shallow breathing, sweating
Anxiety = not being able to function (eg. not being able to sleep because of anxiety or not being able to drive due to fears)
What is Agoraphobia
an anxiety disorder in which an individual fears/avoids certain places or situations
Diagnosis of Agoraphobia requires avoidance of at least two of the following situations: (name them)
public transportation
being in open spaces
being In closed spaces
standing in line or in a crowd
being outside of the home alone
What is Obsessive-compulsive disorder
preoccupations, rituals, and repetitive behaviours
(obsessions and compulsions)
What is the difference between compulsions and obsessions
Obsessions refer to intrusive thoughts, fears and urges
Compulsions are behaviours an individual feels driven to perform
(compulsions are preformed to stop obsessive thoughts)
What is Hoarding Disorder
having the need to save items and not getting rid of them (difficulty parting with them)
What is the difference between Trauma and Stress
Trauma is an emotional response to a shocking/terrifying or life threatening event (like a car accident)
Stress is a reaction to demands in life (like meeting a deadline)
