Transport of lipids Flashcards
What is used to transport lipids?
Lipoprotein complexes
What are lipids transported via?
The bloodstream
How are lipoprotein complexes classified?
Density
What is an issue with classifying lipoprotein complexes by density?
There is overlap in composition from one tyre to the next
What are the four classifications of lipoprotein complex?
Chylomicrons, VLDL, LDL, HDL
VLDL stands for?
Very low density lipoproteins
LDL stands for?
Low density lipoproteins
HDL stands for?
High density lipoproteins
What are all classes of lipoproteins made up of?
Protein, phospholipid, free cholesterol, cholesteryl esters and triacylglycerols
What are the lipid droplets surrounded by in lipoprotein complexes?
Proteins and phospholipids
What do the proteins and phospholipids surrounding lipid droplets in lipoprotein complexes do?
Make them soluble in water
How are free fatty acids transported in the blood?
Bound to serum albumin, causing them to be solubilised
Order of lipoprotein complex that lipids cycle through when moving through the capillaries?
Chylomicron–> VLDL–>LDL–>HDL
What happens to a lipid before it progresses to the next lipoprotein complex?
Within the capillaries a lipoprotein lipase interacts with the lipoprotein complex, causing some of the lipids to be released and pass into the surrounding tissue
What happens to the lipids that dont get absorbed by the tissue surrounding the capillary?
The remnants from the lipoprotein complex they were in end up in the liver, and are modified to form the next lipoprotein complex
