Transport In Humans Flashcards
What type of circulation do humans have?
A double circulation
What is the circuit going to the lungs called?
The pulmonary circuit
What is the circuit going to the rest of the body called?
The systemic circuit
When the heart contracts, what state is it in?
Systole
When the heart relaxes, what state is it in?
Diastole
What is in the blood?
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma
How do the lymphocytes respond to a pathogen?
Release antibodies specific to the antigen on the pathogen
What do antibodies do
- Make pathogens stick together for easier ingestion
- Act as a label
- Neutralise toxins
What do the phagocytes do to a pathogen?
Extend their cytoplasm to engulf a pathogen in the vacuole where enzymes are secreted
What do the red blood cells do?
Haemoglobin in the cytoplasm binds to oxygen and allows it to be carried around the body
What is the role of the platelets in the blood?
Produced by the bone marrow, they cause blood to clot
What happens in the plasma?
- Digested food is transported.
- Co2 is carried.
- Urea is carried to the kidney.
- Hormones.
- heat energy is diverted to areas in need
What do vaccinations cause?
The manufacture of memory cells
