Structure and organisation Flashcards
What is an organ?
A group of tissues that work together to do a particular job
What is an organelle?
A specialised structure within a cell
What is a cell?
A basic structural and functional unit of a living organism
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with a similar structure working together
What is an organ system?
A group of organs with similar functions working together
What is a nucleus?
Controls the cell activity and contains chromosomes.
Describe the rest for glucose
- Add benedict’s solution
- Place in boiling bath
- If glucose is present, orange-red precipitate forms.
What is the test for starch?
- Add iodine solution
2. If turns blue-black, starch is present
What are the characteristics of an enzyme?
- Biological catalysts
- Not used up in reaction
- Reaction specific
- Made of protein
What happens with enzymes?
- Substrate enters enzyme’s active site
- Forms enzyme-substrate complex
- Reaction happens and product leaves active site
How does temperature affect enzymes?
- As it increases, reaction rate increases
- Optimum temp is where the most reactions occur
- If too hot proteins break down and enzymes become denatured
What is the ph effect on enzymes?
- There is an optimum ph
- Ph affects shape of the active site.
- At extremes the enzyme is denatured.
What are the differences between animal and plant cells?
- Animal cells don’t have a cell wall
- There is no vacuole in an animal cell
- Plant cells have chloroplasts
