Transport In Flowering Plants Flashcards
Why don’t single celled organisms need a transport system?
They have a large surface area to volume ratio
Why do multicellular organisms need a transport system?
They have a small surface area to volume ratio
What is transported in the phloem?
Sucrose from photosynthesis and amino acids around the plant from the leaves
What does the xylem transport?
Water and mineral salts around the plant from the roots
Why does water enter the root hair cell?
Enters by osmosis(higher water concentration in the soil)
Water then goes from cell to cell by osmosis
What is the ring of cells surrounding the root called?
The root epidermis
What is the area of the root between the epidermis and the phloem/xylem called?
The cortex of the root
What affects the rate of transpiration?
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Wind speed
What is the top layer of a leaf called?
The waxy cuticle-waterproof
What is the layer of transparent cells containing few chloroplasts called?
The upper epidermis-allows more light to reach the palisade cells
What is the section containing palisade cells and spongy cells?
The spongy mesophyll layer-photosynthesis and diffusion of gases(air spaces)
What is the bottom layer of a leaf?
The lower epidermis-contains guard cells and stomata
