Homeostasis And Excretion Flashcards
1
Q
What is homeostasis?
A
A coordinated response to keep conditions in your body as constant as possible
2
Q
What is negative feedback?
A
When levels in your body rise or fall, your body changes to lower/raise them
3
Q
What do the kidneys do?
A
Balance out the amount of water in the blood and filter out substances
4
Q
What is ultrafiltration?
A
- Happens between the glomerulus and the Bowman’s capsule
- Non-selective
- Small molecules are forced out of the blood into the Bowman’s capsule
5
Q
What is reabsorption?
A
- Glucose taken back into the bloodstream
- First convoluted tubule
- Diffusion and active transport
- A.T requires energy and protein carriers
6
Q
What is osmoregulation?
A
- Water reabsorbed into blood(different volumes)
- Hypothalamus measures blood water content and the pituitary gland releases different amounts of ADH
- ADH makes collecting duct more water permeable→more water taken into the bloodstream
7
Q
What regulates temperature?
A
The hypothalamus
8
Q
How is temperature monitored?
A
Monitors blood temperature and temperature receptors in the skin
9
Q
What cooling mechanisms are there in the body?
A
- Sweating
- Vasodilation
- Hairs lie flat
- Reduced rate of metabolism
10
Q
What warming mechanisms are there in the body?
A
- Shivering
- Vasoconstriction
- Hairs rise and trap air
- Increased metabolism
11
Q
What is in urine?
A
Water, urea and salts
