Cloning In Plants Flashcards
1
Q
What types of cloning are there?
A
- Cuttings
2. Micropropagation/tissue culture
2
Q
What is a clone?
A
An organism that is genetically identical to its parent
3
Q
What is the micropropagation process?
A
- Small pieces of the plant placed in agar jelly containing amino acids, growth hormones, water and minerals
- Shoots are transferred to compost
4
Q
What are the advantages of micropropagation?
A
- Large numbers produced rapidly
- Easier to grow difficult species that can’t through cuttings
- Produced all year round
- Large numbers can be stored
- GM is easier
5
Q
What are the disadvantages of micropropagation?
A
- Many are vulnerable to the same diseases
- Danger of reducing the gene pool
- No development of any new beneficial characteristics
