Fish Farming And Eutrophication Flashcards
1
Q
What aspects are to be taken into account in fish farming?
A
- Maintenance of water quality
- Control of intraspecific predators(big fish eating small) and interspecific predators(other animals)
- Control of disease
- Removal of waste products
- Quality and frequency of feeding
- Use of selective breeding
2
Q
What are the problems and concerns with fish farming?
A
- Habitat destruction
- Disease from or given to the natural population
- Eutrophication
3
Q
What is eutrophication?
A
When a lake or river becomes enriched with nitrates, lots of algae grows. This blocks the sunlight to the plants beneath it, which die. Bacteria decompose these plants. These bacteria use up the oxygen to respire, leading to the suffocation of other organisms in the lake or river

Q
What might be added to the fish food?
A
- Antibiotics
- Lots of protein
- Pigments
