Coordination In Humans Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The sensory and motor neurones
Which type of neurone runs from the receptor to the spinal cord?
The sensory neurones
Which type of neurone runs along the spinal cord to the brain?
The relay neurones
Which type of neurone runs from the brain to the effector?
The motor neurones
What is the long extension on a ,toro neurone called?
The axon
What protects the axon from damage by coating it?
The fatty sheath
What are the small extensions on the front of a motor neurone?
Dendrites
What’re the small spherical objects at the end of the motor neurone?
End plates
What is a nerve impulse?
A wave of electrical activity that travels down a neurone at 100 m/s
What does a strong stimulus do?
Increase the frequency of the impulses, not the strength
What are the two parts of the neurone at a synapse?
Pre-synaptic and post-synaptic knobs
What is transferred at synapses?
Neurotransmitter chemicals
How do neurotransmitter chemicals bind with the other neurone?
The ACH binds with complementary receptors/proteins
What do synapses do?
- Allow communication across he body
- Prevent impulses from going backwards
- Prevent over-stimulation of the nervous system
