Tranquilizers Flashcards
1
Q
Benzodiazepine
-Not soluble in water based solutions, in propalyne glycol solution–> stings on injection
A
Diazepam = valium
2
Q
Benzodiazepine
-Is water soluble
A
Midazolam
3
Q
Benzodiazepine reversal
A
Flemazanil
4
Q
Phenothiazine
- Calming effect
- No antagonist
- Dogs respond more than cats
- May lower seizure threshold–> contraindicated in dogs which have a history of seizures
- Antiemetic effect
- Alpha blocker–> decreased BP–> barrow receptors triggered–> heart rate increases
A
Acepromazine
5
Q
Alpha 2 agonist
- Sedation, analgesia, muscle relaxation
- Bradycardia expected
- Synergism with opiates: analgesia and sedation
- Cattle are very sensitive–> much lower dose than horses
- IV in sheep can cause pulmonary edema
- Oxytocin like effect in ruminants–> can cause abortion
- Cardiovascular: vasoconstriction(–> hypertension), substantially decreased cardiac output
- Don’t give atropine = doesn’t increase cardiac output
A
Xylazine
