Q

Phenothiazine

  • Calming effect
  • No antagonist
  • Dogs respond more than cats
  • May lower seizure threshold–> contraindicated in dogs which have a history of seizures
  • Antiemetic effect
  • Alpha blocker–> decreased BP–> barrow receptors triggered–> heart rate increases
A

Q

Alpha 2 agonist

  • Sedation, analgesia, muscle relaxation
  • Bradycardia expected
  • Synergism with opiates: analgesia and sedation
  • Cattle are very sensitive–> much lower dose than horses
  • IV in sheep can cause pulmonary edema
  • Oxytocin like effect in ruminants–> can cause abortion
  • Cardiovascular: vasoconstriction(–> hypertension), substantially decreased cardiac output
  • Don’t give atropine = doesn’t increase cardiac output
A

Xylazine
