Pharmacology and presentation of Tranexamic Acid?

A

1g:10ml or 500mg:5ml

Antifibrinolytic medicine. It blocks the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, reducing fibrinolysis (breakdown of blood clots) and bleeding.

Indicators of Tranexamic Acid?
PBH

A
  • PPH
  • Hypovolaemia from uncontrolled bleeding.
  • Any other form of bleeding severe enough to cause hypovolaemia requiring 0.9% sodium chloride to be administered IV.

Contraindications of Tranexamic Acid?

A
  • Known severe allergy.
  • Trauma when TXA will be administered more than three hours after the time of injury. This appears to increase mortality rates, the cause of which is not clear.

A

Adult IV
- 1g IV for an adult, over 1-2mins, once

Paediatric IV
- 200mg per 10kg IV, over 1-2mins, once
