2g powder ampoule

Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. That inhibits production of the bacteria cell wall, causing bacteria death

A
  • Suspected meningococcal septicaemia

on Meningococcal bacteria death endotoxins release, can cause profound shock

Dosing Regimes of Ceftriaxone?

A

Adult

  • 2 g IV for an adult, or
  • 2 g IM if IV access cannot be immediately obtained
  • Nil repeats

Pediatrics

  • 300mg:5kg, followed by
  • 500mg per 10kg, IV or IM
  • Nil repeats

Administration

  • 4ml of Saline to ampule
  • IV: then dilute to 10ml, discard down to required dose, administer 1-2mins in running line
  • IM: undiluted, draw up solution equally into 2 syringes, discard down to required dose, then administer into 2 different IM sites
