Pharmacology and presentation of Ceftriaxone?
A
2g powder ampoule
Ceftriaxone is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. That inhibits production of the bacteria cell wall, causing bacteria death

Indicators of Ceftriaxone?
A
- Suspected meningococcal septicaemia
on Meningococcal bacteria death endotoxins release, can cause profound shock

Contraindications of Ceftriaxone?
A
- Anaphylaxis to cephalosporins.

- None

Side Effects of Ceftriaxone?
A
- None

Dosing Regimes of Ceftriaxone?
A
Adult
- 2 g IV for an adult, or
- 2 g IM if IV access cannot be immediately obtained
- Nil repeats
Pediatrics
- 300mg:5kg, followed by
- 500mg per 10kg, IV or IM
- Nil repeats
Administration
- 4ml of Saline to ampule
- IV: then dilute to 10ml, discard down to required dose, administer 1-2mins in running line
- IM: undiluted, draw up solution equally into 2 syringes, discard down to required dose, then administer into 2 different IM sites
