Pharmacology and presentation of Oxytocin?

10units:1ml
- Synthetic version of oxytocin (pituitary gland), which stimulates oxytocin receptors on the uterus, causing increased uterine contraction and reducing blood loss from the uterus

A
- Following normal birth.
- Postpartum haemorrhage.

- Known severe allergy.

Side Effects of Oxytocin?
FAT
A
- Flushing.
- Abdominal cramping.
- Tachycardia.

Dosing Regimes of Oxytocin?
A
- 10units IM, undiluted
- If oxytocin has already been administered as part of routine treatment following normal birth, an additional 1O units of oxytocin should be administered (in the other thigh) if postpartum haemorrhage develops
