What is the MOA of Tramadol?
Tramadol is an analgesic
Opiate receptor stimulation and inhibition of re-uptake of noradrenaline and serotonin
What are the indications for tramadol?
Moderate pain usually in combo with paracetamol and ibuprofen
May be adiministered for severe pain if no Para/ICP available b/c tramadol wont
Contras/Cautions/Pregnancy and tramadol?
Contras:
Known severe allergy
Age less than 12 years
Cautions:
Tramadol within last 4 hours (proceed if does not exceed total dose stated in CPG’s)
Abdo pain (sig GI illness, PO meds normally withheld)
Age >= 75 esp if hx confusion or dementia
Confusion. (anticholinergic /neurotransmitter blocking effect may worsen confusion)
Pregnancy - tramadol should usually be withheld/stop breastfeeding if admin
What dosage should be used with Tramadol?
50 mg for paitient 12 yr or older
What are common adverse effects of Tramadol?
Nausea/vomiting
Lightheadedness/feeling unusual
Sedation
Dry mouth
Onset /duration of Tramadol?
30-60min onset
4-8 hr duration
Should tramadol be given for Mycardial ischemia?
Not indicated
