What is the MOA of Tramadol?

A

Tramadol is an analgesic

Opiate receptor stimulation and inhibition of re-uptake of noradrenaline and serotonin

What are the indications for tramadol?

A

Moderate pain usually in combo with paracetamol and ibuprofen
May be adiministered for severe pain if no Para/ICP available b/c tramadol wont

Contras/Cautions/Pregnancy and tramadol?

A

Contras:
Known severe allergy
Age less than 12 years

Cautions:
Tramadol within last 4 hours (proceed if does not exceed total dose stated in CPG’s)
Abdo pain (sig GI illness, PO meds normally withheld)
Age >= 75 esp if hx confusion or dementia
Confusion. (anticholinergic /neurotransmitter blocking effect may worsen confusion)

Pregnancy - tramadol should usually be withheld/stop breastfeeding if admin
