MOA of Nitrous Oxide poor understood

  • suppresses CNS impulses
  • bocks N-methyl-d-asparate (NMDA) receptors
  • Stimulation of gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA) receptors

A

Moderate to severe pain, usually in addition to other measures

  • known severe allergy
  • Unable to obey commands
  • Suspected pnuemothorax
  • Suspected bowel obstruction
  • SCUBA diving in last 24 hours
  • SCUBA diving related emergency

A
  • Administration within a confined space (ambulance is not a considered a confined space)
  • repeated use associated with psychological dependence, bone marrow suppression and neurological disorders
