Glucagon Flashcards
What is the MOA for Glucagon?
Increases blood glucose level by stimulating glycogenolysis mainly within the liver
What are the indications for Glucagon?
Hypoglycaemia when patient cannot swallow food/glucose gel and where IV access cannot be obtained
What are the contraindications and cautions for Glucagon?
Contra: Known severe allergy
Cautions: None
Can Glucagon be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Safe and should be administered if indicated
What doseage of Glucagon should be administered?
*1 mg IM for an adult or child aged five and over
*0.5mg IM < 5 years old
DO NOT REPEAT DOSE
What is the onset and duration of effect of Glucagon?
5-10 min onset, 15-60 min duration
What are the adverse effects of glucagon?
None
When might glucagon be ineffective in a hypoglycaemic patient?
If glycogen stores are depleted, it will not be effective.
e.g. strenuous exercise, has not eaten >12hrs, adrenal insufficiency, chronic hypoglycaemia, alcohol induced hypoglycaemia
What should you give a patient after giving glucagon?
If competent, you must give patient some food to replace depleted glycogen reserves
