Financial cost of training can be high as off the job training may need to be paid for.
Once trained, staff may leave for better paid jobs.
Productivity may decrease as staff are trained and are taken away from their jobs for training.
What is induction training
This is training given to new employees to cover aspects such as health and safety procedures, organisational policies and overview of facilities.
Benefits of induction training (2)
Ensures new employees are following the expected policies/guidelines.
Allows new employees to settle in before the pressure of the job starts.
Costs of induction training (2)
For highly complex jobs it may take weeks before the employee is ready to start working on their own.
May use up management time as new employee is shown around/introduced to others.
Describe on-the-job training
This is training carried out within the workplace whilst the employee is performing their normal duties.
Benefits of on-the-job training (3)
Employees are trained using their normal equipment.
Training is tailored to the business’ needs and objectives.
Is less expensive than off-the-job as courses don’t need to be paid for.
Costs of on-the-job training (2)
Existing workers may not pass on the best techniques.
Productivity may decrease whilst training takes place if experienced members of staff and/or equipment are being used for training purposes.
Describe off-the-job training
This is training that occurs outside the workplace e.g. at college or training centre.
Benefits of off-the-job training (3)
Training is provided by experienced professionals/experts.
Qualifications can be gained by employees.
Allows training to take place away from the main function of the business meaning their are fewer distractions.
Costs of off-the-job training (3)
Other staff may need to cover the work of an employee who is sent on a course.
Is more expensive than on-the-job due to having to pay for courses/professionals/qualifications.
The training course may not use the same equipment as the business uses.
