You must only dim your headlights and ditch lights when it is in accordance with the following conditions:
- Within yards or depots;
- At night when adjacent to public roads where there exists a risk of motorists being blinded from the headlights being on full;
- When approaching another rail vehicle on an adjacent line, provided you can see that the line ahead is clear and no level crossing intervenes;
- When crossing with other rail vehicles.
When propelling after a radio test has been carried out a pilot must?
Agree on the frequency of radio calling with the operator.
If communication with the pilot is lost, what are you required to do?
- Stop the train;
- Tell TC;
- Wait for TC to provide instructions before moving.
When propelling on the main line, what must the pilot do before Passing a Platform?
Stop the movement before the platform and check that people are clear before calling the movement past the platform.
You encounter a flooded area of the track, what are the rules that apply to an EMU with regard to driving through the area?
- If flood water is flowing and likely to dislodge ballast then stop the train and wait for further instructions from TC;
- Flood water that is still, or water up to the top of the rail head, maximum speed is 10 km/h;
- Above the rail head then stop the train and wait for further instructions from TC.
Identify the 8 locations you can use as a location of your train for the Safe Working Authority (SWA)?
Think acronym BTPLTFMS (Bridges, Tunnels, Platforms)
B ridges
T unnels
P latforms
L evel Crossings
T raction pole meterages
F ull km peg
M ainline points
S ignals
Once you have identified the location, describe the placement of detonator protection:
- 200m from breakdown location
- 3 detonators opposite each other on each rail
- 10 metres apart
Your train is disabled and a relief EMU has been arranged to assist your train to the next station. After attaching a locomotive to a stationary rail vehicle, what must you ensure?
You must ensure they are correctly coupled.
Your train has become disabled in a block section:
1. Who do you contact?
2. What do you agree on?
3. What direction do you proceed in?
- TC
- The direction relief will arrive from.
- Proceed on foot in the direction from which the relief will arrive.
