Degraded Mode Flashcards
The TMS Degraded Mode has been designed to provide an EMU (single
or double unit only) with a means to “move” when a major failure has
occurred with the automated train management systems.
− The Degraded Mode does NOT allow the unit to remain in service
and any passengers must be de-trained at the first suitable platform.
• The TMS (COSMOS) Degraded Mode warning is displayed to the
Operator when a major failure of the traction or brake control system, or
when there has been a complete collapse of units electronic
communication network such that the units components cannot “talk” to
each other and direct control has been lost.

Mode
Activation
When the TMS Degraded Mode Warning is displayed;
− Stop the train
− Apply Park Brake
− Shut the unit down including Battery Off and remove Key.
− Attempt to restart the train normally, if TMS restarts normally continue
in service,
− If unsuccessful, manually open VCB via the console toggle switch
− Break the seal and actuate the Degraded Mode switch
− Manually close the VCB via the console toggle switch
After HVAC starts operating, start-up is complete
The Holding Brake is disabled in Degraded Mode
Place Reverser in forward
Operator to verify control of air brakes.
If ETCS is not operational the ETCS must be isolated and the
ETCS SIFA valves may need to be isolated

Mode
Operational
Restrictions
With the TMS Degraded Mode applied, the following functionality is
available.
− Reduced traction power as only the traction motors in the leading
motor car(s) operate
− Air brake (EP) only, no dynamic or regenerative braking
− Pantograph automatically raises on start-up and lowers on shutdown
− Manual opening and closing of the VCB
Manual Neutral Section management required by the Operator.
− Automatic coupling / uncoupling functionality is disabled, if required,
manual uncoupling of the units is available
− The Holding Brake is disabled
− Only those warnings that have dedicated button and lights on the
Operators console will be available
− The Door, Traction and Emergency Loops are all disabled
The Train manager must visually confirm that all doors are in fact
closed before giving ROW, and to warn passengers to remain
clear of all doors as no warnings will be generated if the doors
were to open while the train is moving.
− When the Degraded Mode is applied, the Operator may need to
isolate the ETCS SIFA Dump valve to enable the brake pipe to be
recharged.
The ETCS SIFA valve is the second SIFA valve back from the
Operators cab, A side, each end
− Air Compressors, HVAC units and main transformer oil cooling
pumps all operate independently and at full power
− Passenger car emergency lighting only available
− If passenger announcements are required to be made the Operator
must activate the Communication Emergency switch on the cab back
wall panel to enable direct Operator to PA speakers in the passenger
cars.
When the Communication Emergency switch is activated the
Operators handset is immediately live, so caution should be
exercised.
− The unit auto-shuts down immediately the Operators key is removed
• The TMS Degraded Mode must be considered as an Emergency
Condition and it is only to be used to enable the train to be moved to the
Depot for repair, passengers must be detrained, and the unit restricts
itself to a maximum of 40 kph while in traction
