ROS (Rail Operating Standards) Flashcards
How many authorised people can be in the cab at one time?
4 including the driver.
What must an operator do, if for any reason they are unable to maintain timetable speed?
They must inform TC of the problem ASAP, clearly stating the reason and procedure to be adopted under the circumstances.
Complete the following:
If a headlight/ditchlight fails in the depot before entering service, the EMU must…
be replaced or repaired before entering service.
SPAD A is the most serious SPAD of all categories, what are the first two SPAD A Classifications when a SPAD has occured and according to available evidence?
- A stop aspect indication, or end-of-movement authority was displayed or given correctly and in sufficient time for the train to be stopped at the signal safely;
- The stop aspect indication or end-of-movement authority concerned was not displayed or given correctly but was preceeded by the correct aspect or indication.
Platform edge reflective catseye markers come in 4 colours. What are they and what do they mean?
Blue = 6-car EMU stop location
White = 3-car EMU stop location
Yellow = coupling marker located midway along the platform
Red = end of line/buffer platform train stop marker
What is the appropriate speed a train should be traveling when entering the start of a platform in good weather, on a flat grade?
40-50kph
The use of low adherent mode is recommended when…?
- the windscreen wipers need to be activated.
- moisture, condensation or ice can be seen on the ground/rail.
- the driver feels it necessary.
What are 4 events that could cause the CSDE warning to be displayed on the TMS?
- 0 speed fault
- Post-ETCS override
- Post-ETCS reset
- ETCS isolated
- ETCS in staff responsible mode
- Post-full unit shutdown and restart
- Train out of position on the platform, eg not at the correct stopping marker or mark for consist size
- Door or signal balise fault
- Post-wheel slide event
- Attempt to open the doors on the non-platform side
In the event of unusual circumstances, accidents, derailment or obstruction, what must the operator do?
The operator must advise TC of what has happened and the location of the train, then follow the agreed procedure.
If you are in service, where do you find the details of restrictions if the headlights/ditchlights fail on route?
AOR, ROS, EMU Operator Standards,
Section 5, Page 47
If an operator feels ill, eg stress or sickness enroute, what must they do?
The LE must contact TC so that alternative arrangements can be made.
How is a rolling brake test completed?
As the train starts to move off, apply the brake. The operator must feel the retardation as the braking system applies.
When would a driver be required to perform a rolling brake test?
- When moving a unit in any depot or stabling, for the first time.
- When moving a unit from any platform after startup for the first time.
- After any consist size change, ie a single unit to a double unit, or a double unit split into two single units.
- After any continuity brake test.
If any authorised person with a cab pass is causing distraction to the operator whilst driving, what must the operator do?
- Advise the cab rider that they are a distraction.
- Stop the train if the distraction persists.
Describe the process that must be followed when you have attempted to open the doors on Mt Albert platform and the CSDE warning is displayed on the TMS?
- Advise TC of the situation and that there will be a short delay;
- Advise the TM or make a PA that there will be a short delay in opening the train doors;
- Contact the TSM for authorisation to bypass the CSDE.
