Toxoplasmosis Flashcards
Infective stage of toxoplasma?
Bradyzoites
Organism for toxo?
Toxoplasmosis Gondii
Diagnostic stage of toxo?
issue cysts with bradyzoites (biopsy), tachyzoites.
Mode of transmission?
Classic: immature oocysts - from cat faeces (classic)
mature oocysts - contaminated food
But more commonly pig meat containing bradyzoites (undercooked)
Following ingestion of bradyzoites, what stage of toxo spreads to tissues?
Tachyzoites
Organs affected by toxo?
Brain, eyes, muscles, fetes
What is this?
Crescent shaped tachyzoite of toxoplasmosis
Pointed anterior end
Prominent nucleus
Structure/stage of life cycle in toxo in tissues?
Bradyzoite
What is this?
Bradyzoite
Definitive host for toxoplasmosis? Intermediate hosts?
Cats (D)
Humans (I)
High prevalence areas of toxo?
France - eating raw or undercooked meat
Central America has been related to the frequency of stray cats
If immunocompetent person gets toxo, symptoms?
10% to 20% of patients with acute infection may develop cervical lymphadenopathy and/or a flu-like illness
Mostly asymptomatic!
Rare: ocular damage, visual disturbances
Diagnosis of toxo?
Isolation of parasites from blood or other body fluids, by intraperitoneal inoculation into mice or tissue culture
ELISA for IgG and IgM antibodies most common
What should you do if you get a positive IgM antibody for toxo (IgG negative)
Repeat in 2 weeks - could be fast positive or acute infection
IgG should be positive 2 weeks later if acute infection.
IgM can sometimes be present for up to 2 yrs
Rx of Toxo?
Pyrimethamine plus sulfadiazine or clindamycin
Alternative: Co-trimoxazole
