Topic 8 Flashcards
Order of endocrine organs in body
Pineal Gland, Hypothalamus, Pituitary Gland, Thyroid Gland, Adrenal glands, Pancreas, Testes and Ovaries
Function Pineal gland
Receives information about the state of light and secrete melatonin
Hypothalamus function
The link between the nervous system and endocrine systems through its connection with Pituitary gland.
Pituitary Gland.
THE MASTER GLAND. Secrets hormones into the bloodstream eg ADH and Growth Hormone
Thyroid gland
Regulates several processes such as growth, metabolism and development by the releases of thyroxin
Adrenal Gland
Produces adrenaline which regulates metabolism, immune system and blood pressure
Pancreas
Releases hormones into the blood stream eg glucagon and insulin which regulate blood glucose levels
Testes
Secretes testosterone
Ovaries
Secretes estrogen and progesterone
Role of Circulating hormones
Hormones which travel around the body in the blood eg adrenaline and testosterone
Role of local hormones
Hormones which act on neighboring cells without entering the bloodstream eg glucagon
Role of hormones
Hormones are secreted by endocrine glands to regulate and maintain bodily functions
Most often release of hormones occur in short burst however some are released over a longer period of time to stimulate permanent change
How are circulating hormones regulated
They are controlled by complex feedback mechanisms which can be influenced by
Signals from nervous system, chemical changes in the blood and other hormones like Growth Hormone
Negative feedback
Reveres systems in the controlled conditions. Most in human body are
Role of Endocrine System and Nervous system in regulating circulatory hormones
Endocrine System- Produces and secretes the hormones required
Central Nervous System- Signals inputs and outputs from the control centre done by nerve impulse or chemical signals
