Topic 6.3 Components of fitness Flashcards
Health related components of fitness definition
5 areas that help maintain health and performing daily tasks without fatigue
Performance components of fitness definition
Subsection of fitness that focus on more technical aspects of sport.
Examples of health related components of fitness
Body Composition, Cardio-Respiratory system, flexibility, muscular endurance and strength
Examples of performance related components of fitness
Agility, Balance, Coordination, Power, reaction time and speed
Body Composition
The ratio of lean body mass to fat body mass
Cardio Respiratory fitness
The ability to continue to train the the cardiovascular system for a prolonged period of time
Flexibility
The ability for a joint to move through a full range of motion
Muscular Endurance
Ability to contract a muscle repeatedly over a period of time
Muscular strength
Ability of muscle to exert a maximal force through a range of motion
Agility
Ability to rapidly change position of the entire body
Balance
Persons ability to maintain there equilibrium when moving
Coordination
the ability to use different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently:
Power
The rate at which one can perform work/time (worse athletes less power)
Reaction time
The length of time taken to respond to a given stimulus or an event
Speed
The ability to perform a movement in a short period of time (eg sprint)
Examples of muscular endurance test
Maximum sit up and push up test
Examples of strength test
Hand grip dynamometer
Example of speed test
40m Sprint
Example of agility test
Illinoi Agility test
Example of aerobic capacity test
Copper 12 minute run, Harvard step test and Multi stage fitness test
Example of flexibility test
Sit and reach test
Example of reaction time test
Drop test and Computer simulation
Example of Power tests
Vertical jump and standing broad jump
Example of balance test
Stork stand
Example of coordination test
Hand ball toss
Example of body composition
Body mass index
Positives and negatives of Illinoi agility test
Positives- Minimal equipment and is easy to do
Negatives- Choice of footwear and surface affects time
Positives and negatives of flexibility
Positives- Easy and quick to perform
Negatives- Variation in limb lengths making comparison misleading
Positives and negatives of muscular endurance tests
Positives- Simple to perform require minimal equipment and many participants can do it at once
Negatives- They dont replicate movement of activity
Positives and negatives of speed test
Positives- Simple to perform and require minimal equipment
Negatives- Weather conditions and running surfaces affect results
Positives and negatives of strength test
Positives- Simple and used as a general test for strength
Negatives- Used as general test for strength and doesn’t represent other muscle groups
Positives and negatives of reaction time (computer simulation)
Positives- Easy and quick to conduct
Negatives- Not very relatable to any sport
Positives and negatives of power test
Positives- Test is simple and easy to conduct
Negatives- Technique plays part in maximizing score
Positives and negatives of balance test
Positives- No equipment required and simple to conduct
Negatives- Assistant required to complete the test
Positives and negatives of coordination test
Positives- Minimal equipment and can be done alone
Negatives- Repetition is needed to gather accurate results
Positives and negatives of body composition (body mass index)
Positives- Simple calculations required from height and weight
Negatives- BMI is inaccurate as measure of body fatness
Positives and negatives of aerobic capacity (Copper run test)
Positives- Limited equipment, maximal test
Negatives- Environmental factors influence it
Positives and negatives of Multi stage fitness test
Positives- Easy to set up limited equipment and maximal test
Negatives- Environmental factors influence it and stop start
