Topic 6 - Crude Oil Flashcards
1
Q
what is crude oil?
A
a mixture of hydrocarbons
2
Q
how does the length of hydrocarbons affect boiling point?
A
longer hydrocarbons have higher boiling points
3
Q
how is crude oil separated?
A
- the oil is heated until it is mostly gas, then enters a fractionating column
- in the column the temperature gets gradually cooler as you go up
- when the substance reaches a part of the column where the temperature is lower than its boiling point it condenses
- substances with high boiling points condense early - at the bottom
- bubble caps stop separated liquids from remixing
4
Q
what is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A
a hydrocarbon only containing single bonds between carbons
5
Q
what is a unsaturated hydrocarbon?
A
a hydrocarbon also containing double or triple bonds between carbons
