Topic 4 - Metals and Redox (Paper 2) Flashcards
how are unreactive metals found?
uncombined, as they dont form compounds with other elements
what is a metal ore?
a metal compound found in the earths crust, containing enough of the metal to make it worthwhile extracting
how does reactivity of a metal affect extraction?
the more reactive a metal is, the harder it is to extract from a compound
how are metals seperated from their oxides?
by a reduction reaction
what is the most common type of reduction reaction?
using carbon as a reducing agent to seperate the oxygen from the metal
which metals can be extracted by carbon?
metals which are less reactive than carbon, because more reactive elements form compounds more easily
which metals cant be extracted by carbon and how are they extracted?
metals which are more reactive than carbon are extracted by electrolysis
how is electrolysis used in extraction?
electricty seperated the metal from other elements in the compound
