Topic 5 - Energy Transfer in Reactions Flashcards
what is an exothermic reaction?
a reaction which gives out energy to the surroundings, usually in the form of heat and usually shown by a rise in temperature of the surroundings
what is an endothermic reaction?
a reaction which takes in energy to the surroundings, usually in the form of heat and usually shown by a fall in temperature of the surroundings
what is the overall change in energy in a reaction called?
enthalpy change
what are the units of enthalpy change?
kJ/mol
if the reaction is exothermic what is the enthalpy change value?
negative because the reaction is giving out energy
if the reaction is endothermic what is the enthalpy change value?
positive because the reaction is taking in energy
